This album is mostly a composite of Pithecanthropus Erectus and Mingus at the Bohemia, two sessions recorded about a month apart in 1955-56 by the Charles Mingus Quintet. Disappointingly, though still great, 'Love Chant' is an alternate take (at half the length) than the superior version on the original Pithecanthropus Erectus. 00 Pithecanthropus.10'33 A Foggy day.18'21 Profile of Jackie.21'31 Love Chant. THE COMPLETE ALBUMS COLLECTION 1953 - 1957 One of the most important figures in the development of American music, Charles Mingus will forever be remembered as being amongst the most inspirational and innovative composers and musicians of the 20th Century. A virtuoso double bassist and an accomplished pianist, Mingus extensive back catalogue of legendary recordings set a new standard in jazz experimentation, blending hard bop with elements of gospel, blues, classical and avant-garde. With a fearsome reputation as bandleader, Mingus direction drew some of the finest performances from the best performers ever to grace the genre, and in turn he left his mark on the work of generations of jazz musicians. This four disc collection, containing 10 original Charles Mingus records, serves as a superb introduction to the genius of the great man as bandleader. Running at over five hours in completion, with these classic records remastered to the highest possible quality, this compilation of early works demonstrates just how advanced Mingus skills were at this early point in his recording career. Featuring a host of fine supporting musicians across a selection featuring some of his most important albums, this set will prove a delight for both the long term fan and those new to the glories of Charles Mingus music.

Tunes History
Pithecanthropus Erectus will only be played once after that, in 1970 during the America sessions. It has seen been covered by Hal Willner, and Paul Motian.
A Foggy Day (a Gershwin classic) had previously been played by Mingus with Hazel Scott (1955) and Max Roach (at the Bohemia, two takes, 1955) and will never be played again by him. All three renditions are on the Debut Complete set.
Profile of Jackie has been played only once, and has not been covered.
Love Chant was played twice before (again at the Bohemia), and never after. Herbie Mann, and Andrew Hill covered it.
